2 Port coaches come together for a greater cause

Port’s baseball and softball teams are joining forces on Saturday, April 30 to fundraise for the American Cancer Society. Boys baseball will face-off at three levels, all playing against the Mineola Mustangs, with the 8th grade playing at 9:30 a.m., varsity baseball will begin at 12:30 p.m., and junior varsity baseball playing at 4:15 p.m.

“This is always an exciting day for our program. This fundraiser has helped generate thousands of dollars in donation to the American Cancer Society,” said varsity baseball coach Matthew Holzer. Holzer said the fundraiser has been on pause for two years due to the pandemic. Port’s varsity softball will also face off against Mineola, at 1:30 p.m., which according to Coach Eric Sutz, is “an exciting day to play a game with a higher purpose.”

The yearly tradition of Strike Out Cancer was initiated in 2011 when varsity softball coach Eric Sutz thought of bringing this national movement to a local level.

After the passing of a fellow coach’s mother from cancer, Sutz, along with Coach Dooley, brought the concept to Port Washington. “We wanted to contribute to the American Cancer Society and to teach the girls there is a bigger sense of responsibility,” said Sutz. “It’s not just about playing but giving back to the community.”

All games will be played at Schreiber High School. There will be food, beverages, and T-shirts for sale at the games. To help support this event, go to https://www.portnet.org/Page/14587
