Port Washington Public Library celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

The Port Washington Public Library is honored to host its second annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. This month-long celebration, which runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, recognizes Hispanic-American communities’ rich history, culture, and contributions to the United States.

Remarkable Hispanic Writers Throughout History Exhibit: September 1- 30 Community Gallery, Second Floor 

Port Washington Public Library will have an exhibition displaying the work of history’s most influential Hispanic writers.

Cumbia, Arepa & Empanada Battle
Tuesday, September 19th at 7:00 p.m. Lapham Room

Join us as our Hispanic ESOL students battle for the best food and dance title! Enjoy a sampling of the food, listen to cumbias from different Latin countries, and enjoy an exceptional performance by Doumbek drummer Casey Bond—registration required.

Aerorumba Dance Class
Friday, September 22nd at 7:00 p.m. Lapham Room

Join Kiko Salsa as we make our hearts beat with the rhythm of Latin music! This fun one-hour aerobics dance class is open to all ages—registration required.

KIDS: Lotería
Wednesday, September 27th from 4:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Play Lotería (a fun Mexican bingo game), learn new Spanish words with Ms. Jessica, and create a beautiful paper flower craft. This program is for families with children ages 5 to 12—registration required.

Paraguayan Cooking Demo
Wednesday, September 27th at 7:00 p.m. Lapham Room
Discover the richness of Paraguayan culture through food! Sample the delicious food and learn how to make these tasty treats— registration required.

Fiesta in the Park
Sunday, October 1st, from 2-6 p.m. • Blumenfeld Family Park
Port Washington’s Second Annual Fiesta in the Park for Hispanic Heritage Month is scheduled for October 1st, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Blumenfeld Family Park (across the street from the Port Washington Public Library (PWPL). Live orchestra playing top salsa and other hits, dance lessons, children’s performances, sweet and savory Latin American cuisine, quality children’s crafts, and entertainment – a family event for our community by our community!

All participating non-profits and vendors will offer activities for children. The PWPL will provide kids with a Latin American passport experience, and the Library’s ESOL students also assembled fun crafts and activities. Food trucks and other main course options serving Latin American cuisine will also be available for purchase.

The Fiesta in the Park event is free admission for all. Free street parking and additional parking in the Library are available. In case of inclement weather, the rain date is scheduled for October 8th, 2023. For real-time updates, please follow the event’s Instagram page @hispanicheritagepw.

This event is in partnership with the Port Washington Public Library, the Parent Resource Center (PRC), Landmark on Main Street, and the Township of North Hempstead. Family Film: Encanto (2021- 102 min.)
Monday, October 9th at 2:00 p.m. • Lapham Room, Lower Level
The Madrigals live in the mountains of Colombia in a charmed place called the Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift — every child except Mirabel. However, she soon may be the Madrigals’ last hope when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is now in danger. This film will be shown in English with Spanish subtitles. No registration is required!

Latino Talent Night
Thursday, October 12th from 6:00 p.m. • Lapham Room
A vibrant musical night featuring talented professional tango dancers, flamenco dancers, and Latin performers, including some of the Library’s Hispanic ESOL students. There will also be an exhibit of traditional clothing, crafts, and food from Latin America. Registration required.
