Also on hand will be the Art Guild of Port Washington, Be the Rainbow, Crazy Cakes Cafe, the Cow Neck Historical Society, Growing Love Community Garden, Hearts PW, Helen Keller National Center, The Knitting Place, Littig House Community Center, the Nicholas Center, the Parent Resource Center, the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce, the Port Washington Children’s Center, PSEG, the Port Washington Public Library, and students from Weber Middle School.

Residents Forward board and staff, State Sen. Anna Kaplan, state Assemblywoman Gina Silitti, Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jennifer DeSena, Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman Mariann Dalimonte, Mayor Jim Avena of Manorhaven, Mayor Bob Weitzner of Port North, Mayor Nora Haagenson of Baxter Estates, cocal community activist and fiber srtist and project director of Yarn Arms Around Port Allison White, Yarn Arms Around Port sponsors Alana Benjamin and Frank Ullman, and the community at large.

The Yarn Arms Around Port project, which was launched in October, has brought together hundreds of Port residents to crochet granny squares and hands, which will become yarn arm “hugs” to be wrapped around 50 trees along Port Washington’s mile-long Main Street for the month of April.

Residents Forward has planned three environmental education initiatives during the month of April to explore the feelings and learning inspired by the Yarn Arms art:

An “I Love Trees” Video Contest allows residents of all ages to share why they love trees
A “Be A Friend to Tree” Interactive story time for the youngest members of the community under one of the yarn-armed trees

Hello, My Name is…” Tree Labels made for each tree by Weber Middle School students, providing tree names, the energy they save, the carbon dioxide and pollutants they remove, and the stormwater they intercept.

The event will be held Friday April 1 at 4 p.m at Blumenfeld Family Park, next to 232 Main St. in Port Washington

This April, we at Residents Forward are excited to celebrate Earth Month with an innovative project that exemplifies our commitment to trees, environmental education and forging creative partnerships with other organizations and individuals in our community.
