The North Shore School District Board of Education appointed Carol Ann Smyth as its new assistant superintendent for instruction during the March 9 board meeting.

“It is an honor to work at the North Shore Schools,” Smyth said in a press release. “North Shore is a wonderful place. We have amazing students, committed parents, incredibly talented educators and a dedicated staff.”

She went on to say, “We are a unique learning community committed to honoring tradition and pursuing continuous growth and innovation such that all of our students can discover and follow their dreams. I care deeply about our school district, its mission and each member of our learning community.”

The position is effective July 1.

Smyth has served as the interim assistant superintendent for instruction since May 26, working closely with Superintendent Chris Zublionis. She previously served as a curriculum director for the district, initially as director of science for K-12 and then as director of elementary S.T.E.A.M., science, technology, engineering, art and math.

The Board of Ed said Smyth has fostered collaborative work in the school district during her tenure in order to “support meaningful and impactful learning” for students. This is guided by her belief that “each student deserves a well-rounded education of the highest quality which inspires a true love of learning.”

Dave Ludmar, president of the board, observed that he and his members have had to make difficult decisions in their roles overseeing the school district.

“This is not one of those decisions,” he said. “This is a very clear one. Dr. Smyth is creative, innovative and I would call [her] a brilliant educator.”
