Several hospitals throughout the North Shore of Nassau County were listed as some of the state’s best in a U.S. News & World Report announced on Tuesday.

The list used 20 benchmark procedures to grade 4,500 health care facilities and individual hospitals for their lists. The company also ranked hospitals in 15 areas of complex specialty care, taking into account the quality of patients’ experiences, how well they have fared after their treatments and adequate staffing.

The Manhattan-based NYU Langone Health, which has a Long Island hospital in Mineola, was ranked as the third-best health care system throughout the nation and as New York’s best. For the second consecutive year, the system reported joint data for all of its facilities.

“This recognition is reflective of one standard of care (one hospital provider number) that is consistently supported by our faculty and staff across each of our hospitals,” NYU Langone CEO Robert Grossman said in a statement. “It is only when one looks at the constellation of the most respected rating systems collectively that you can really assess how each institution performs.”

Northwell Health’s North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset was ranked the fifth-best in the state, Catholic Health’s St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center in Roslyn was ranked as the state’s sixth-best facility, while New Hyde Park’s Long Island Jewish Medical Center came in seventh in New York, according to the list.

St. Francis was ranked as “high performing” in 17 common adult procedures and conditions, including hip fracture, hip replacement, kidney failure, lung cancer surgery, knee replacement, back surgery, heart bypass surgery and others.

“Catholic Health’s patient care teams again demonstrated their commitment to serving our patients and delivering quality care in a safe environment,” Catholic Health President & CEO Patrick M. O’Shaughnessy said in a statement. “St. Francis’s standing as a national leader in cardiology is a huge asset to Long Island, which is why we’ve expanded access to its services to multiple locations in Nassau and Suffolk. St. Francis Hospital has also earned national recognition in areas such as gastroenterology, neurology and orthopedics.”

North Shore University Hospital was nationally ranked in the top 30 for pulmonology and lung surgery, cardiology/heart surgery, geriatrics, urology and orthopedics, according to the list. Last month, Northwell’s Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park was ranked by U.S. News & World as Long Island’s top-ranked children’s hospital.

“I know just how tremendous our workforce is because I see it every day, so it’s wonderful to recognize that care, effort and expertise reflected in the latest US News Best Hospital rankings,” Northwell Health President & CEO Michael Dowling said in a statement. “Northwell Health has faced herculean challenges over these last two pandemic years – and we’ve become stronger for it. We’ve taken those lessons to heart and are moving ahead to create an even better patient experience with an ever more connected continuum of care with the communities that we serve.”
