The Village of Flower Hill is looking to reduce its speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph, Mayor Randall Rosenbaum said Monday.

The monthly trustee meeting served as the first public hearing for the proposed local law. According to Rosenbaum, the reduction would make residents safer.

“None of our streets have sidewalks,” he said. “All the kids are walking, the people are walking their pets. There are joggers, kids on bikes, skateboards and scooters.”

In August, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed Legislation A.1007-A/S.2021-A into law. It permits municipalities to lower speed limits to 25 mph to reduce traffic-related accidents and fatalities.

According to Vision Zero, vehicle stopping distance improves by 45 feet (23%) when traveling at 25 mph vs. 30.

There were no public comments. The board voted to continue the discussion at their meeting next month.

The next Board of Trustees meeting is scheduled for Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. It will take place in Village Hall.
