Paul Oleksiw unopposed in Port Washington Garbage District race

Incumbent Paul Oleksiw is running unopposed for another three-year term on the Port Washington Garbage District Board of Commissioners in December.

If re-elected, Oleksiw would rejoin Commissioners Stephen Scott and Nadine Delmonte.

He is a local business owner and lifelong resident of Port Washington. Prior to serving as commissioner, Oleksiw was a member of the Board of Directors of the Port Washington Business Improvement District.

The garbage district handles bids and contracts with waste collection companies and also acts as an intermediary between residents and the collection company.

The district’s primary responsibility is to collect and dispose of refuse and recyclables for its residents and merchants. It does this by hiring a third-party contractor and monitoring their performance throughout the contract’s term.

Dejana Industries Inc. is currently in charge of the district’s waste and recycling collections. They will receive $2.324 million for 2023 and $2.347 million for 2024.

The garbage district’s budget for next year is $2.42 million, according to the Town of North Hempstead.

Voting for district commissioner will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at the Polish American Citizens Association at 5 Pulaski Place from noon to 9 p.m.
