Most of the ponds in this county are small ponds located within parks. You will need to fish from the shore since boat fishing will probably not be allowed.
Of course, before you go, you will want to have a backpack to carry your tackle. Once you have all of the supplies you need packed, you will be ready to set out on a new fishing adventure.
1. Hempstead Lake State Park
This state park is one of the best options if you want to do more than only fishing on your trip. For instance, the park also has plenty of trails, a tennis court, playgrounds, and picnic areas. Plus, while you are there, you should stop by and see the iconic wooden carousel.
There are two ponds that you can fish in, the South and McDonald ponds. They both have various fish during the season, including bass, carp, perch, and even blackfish. The park also has a lot of trout in these ponds during the fall.
This fishing spot is catch and release only. Additionally, you will want to be sure that you have a valid NY state fishing license if you are older than 16.
This site has a festival in the fall, which is designed to show different fishing techniques. There are programs for both kids and adults during the fishing festival.

2. Captain Lou Fleet Freeport
The Captain Lou Fleet is one way that you can actually get out on the water to fish. They are located in Central Nassau County and are about a half hour from New York City and Eastern Long Island- so you could make an entire trip based on it
They sail every day and offer fishing trips with fish cleaning services. The crew will take you to different areas, depending on what fish are currently in season. The boat they take you on is large and equipped with a bar and food area.

3. Twin Lakes Preserve
After you finish fishing here, you can take a walk on the short trail that goes around the pond. It should take you about 20 minutes from start to end if you want to stay outdoors and get some fresh air before going home. There is also a playground for kids.
You can fish in the lake and enjoy your surroundings. The area is clean and allows you to enjoy a beautiful setting. You will be able to enjoy the park at almost any time since it offers free parking and admission.
4. Captree State Park
At Captree, you can choose between plenty of different charter boats if you want to go out on the water. On top of fishing, you can also try out crabbing here. Ensure that you do not catch any female crabs that are carrying eggs, as this will earn you a fine.
There are two substantial fishing piers available if you would like to fish from them. Afterward, you can visit the restaurant in the park or go scuba diving. You can relax at one of their picnic areas too. Finally, this park has a bait and tackle shop, so you will be alright if you forget to bring anything with you.
5. Bay Park Fishing Station
There are a variety of tackle and bait shops here, so you will be able to buy everything you need onsite if you have to. Fishing is fun and opens most times of the year. They have detailed reports online, so you can stay up to date with the best times to go.
There are also playgrounds, bathrooms, boating, and a barbecue area. If you have any kids who love fishing, they would certainly enjoy a trip to this park.

If you’re visiting during the summer, I would strongly recommend the following spots on the north shore. (During the winter the surf becomes high on the north shore, and it’s no longer possible to snorkel there.)
Tunnels Beach. This long beach forming the eastern side of the mile-wide Maniniholo Bay is famous for snorkeling and scuba diving. You’ll find an inner reef just off shore (visible in the picture above) teeming with fish. Scuba divers explore the tunnels under the outer edge of the inner reef that give the beach it’s name. You can also easily snorkel the outer reef by starting near the point at the eastern end of the bay, following the reef offshore and to the west (with what is typically a weak current), then swimming across the channel back to shore. On the outer reef you’ll find coral as big as houses, and I’ve seen sea turtles at close range twice out of about ten trips to the outer reef. Tunnels never gets crowded because it is such a long beach and parking is relatively scarce. In the summer you need to get there early (around 8am) to park in one of the handful of spots in one of the two small lanes on the beach side of Kuhio Highway, or almost as early (around 9am) to park legally at Ha’ena Beach Park and walk the 1/3 mile down the beach or road to Tunnels.
