Roslyn School Board prez addresses Uvalde in meeting

Roslyn School District Board of Education President Meryl Waxman Ben-Levy addressed the recent school shooting in Uvalde, Tex., and observed a moment of silence during a meeting on Thursday night.

On May 24, an 18-year-old fatally shot 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School and injured 17 others. Ben-Levy took a moment to mention the incident after expressing her joy at the accomplishments of the high school sports teams and the graduating seniors.

“As we celebrate our students and we celebrate our families and our educators, I think that we must take a moment tonight to remember the students and the families and the educators who were lost days ago through a horrific, senseless act of violence,” she said. “That should never befall anyone, anywhere in our nation, but certainly not a school. So please, let’s take a moment ladies and gentlemen and be silent for Uvalde, Texas.”

Afterward, the board moved on to a few administrative tasks before concluding. The meeting lasted about 10 minutes.

“I pray that we do better,” Ben-Levy said. “And I pray that everyone everywhere who needs it finds peace.”

Three separate Long Island students have been arrested in the past week after allegedly threatening to commit a mass shooting.

Students from nearby Schreiber Senior High School in Port Washington walked out last week to demand stricter gun laws and other measures.

The next school board meeting is set for June 23 and will be streamed online.
