Sewanhaka High School students participated in Know Your Classmates day on Oct. 26 as part of Beyond Differences’ national program designed to lift up all students, allow them to be seen for who they are and to feel a sense of belonging.

Students discovered their classmates’ diverse backgrounds through in-class curriculum and the creation of a giant map that shows where students and their families were born. The Sewanhaka program was designed and planned by art teacher Allison Flippone.

Throughout the day, students in both the junior and senior high cafeterias filled out hand-shaped cutouts to create a mural describing who they are. They also placed stars on maps to show their family heritage. Both the hand prints and maps will be on display in the cafeteria all year. T-shirts celebrating the event were sponsored by Jostens.
