New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Union Free School District Mathletes recently participated in the 2023 Regional Elementary Virtual Math tournament.

Hillside Grade School fifth graders Austin Fang, Claire Fang and Surie Sicat, and Manor Oaks School fourth graders Muhammad Najam, Ethan Tsui and Isabelle Wong won for their respective grade levels.

The six NHP-GCP students will be moving on to compete in the 2023 New York Statewide Elementary Mathematics Tournament on May 20. The winners have been awarded $1,000 per team, and now could win the $5,000 grand prize at the state tournament.

Through a grant from NYSED, the Mathletes have been working with the First in Math program to improve their fact fluency, procedural fluency and computational thinking skills. The teams work with district Mathletes teacher Tammie Svendsen.
