Incumbents win in Port special elections

Three incumbents ran for re-election in Port Washington special district elections on Tuesday, and all three won.

Dave Franklin was re-elected as a Port Washington police commissioner, collecting 173 votes in an uncontested election.

Franklin, who has served as one of the department’s three commissioners for six years, has lived in Port Washington for 30 years.

“I’m humbled that I was re-elected as commissioner,” Franklin said. “I really thinks it’s a reflection to what I am doing, and it’s people saying I’m doing a good job in the community.”

While running for re-election, Franklin said he is the “community guy” in the department, relaying a “steady flow” of information from the police to the people.

“It’s all about the people,” he said. “This is public service at the basic level and people should have a lot of contact with the department, because we’re doing this for the people. We’re in it for the people.”

Police commissioners serve two-year terms.

“I appreciate the trust and support of the people of Port Washington, and I appreciate that so many people came out in an uncontested election,” Franklin said. “I will continue to do my best to keep earning their respect and letting their voices be heard.”

Mindy Germain was re-elected as one of the three Port Washington Water District commissioners, garnering 178 votes. She ran unopposed.

“I am honored the community entrusts me with this important responsibility,” Germain said. “I am also excited about the journey ahead. I am filled with gratitude that so many people showed support and came out to vote, especially in an uncontested election.”

Germain, the executive director of Residents For a More Beautiful Port Washington, said she’s been studying data on the sustainability and use of Port Washington’s drinking water since before she joined the water district.

“We will work collaboratively with the community on preventative maintenance, tracking and addressing threats and pro-actively managing our water supply for the future,” she said.

Water district commissioners serve three-year terms.

Germain has lived in Port Washington since 2000.

Bill Scaglione was also re-elected, winning a fifth three-year term as a Port Washington Garbage District commissioner in an uncontested race.

He received 125 votes.

“I’m honored to be given the opportunity to serve the community for three more years and I would like to thank those who took the time to vote,” Scaglione said.

Scaglione, a Port Washington resident of over 30 years, owns Bill’s Auto Repair on Main Street.

“I care about the community,” he said while running for election. “I care about the town, because I live here and work here and own a business here and volunteer here and attend church here. The town is everything in my life and I am proud to be able to say I serve it by working with the district.”
