First meeting of Mineola Community Council set for Thursday

The inaugural meeting of the Mineola Community Council, a group of representatives from different local organizations, will meet Thursday night at village hall to collaborate and work together.

The council, spearheaded by the Chamber of Commerce’s Tony Lubrano and Mayor Paul Pereira, wants to form a community calendar, website and social media presence.

“All these organizations are doing things to make Mineola a better place, but we’re not helping each other,” Lubrano said. “We thought this could be a way to work together to support or at least be aware of each other’s events, which would be helpful to all of us.”

Lubrano said he approached Pereira with the idea in March and the mayor’s office sent out letters on the council’s mission and Thursday meeting in May. Lubrano said close to 40 organizations have been contacted to gauge their interest in joining the council.

Lubrano said the planned meeting is a work in progress right now, but he immediately wants to get everyone’s contact information to establish communication. As for future meetings, Lubrano said he believes the council would only have to meet a few times a year through an executive board that will be formed at a later date as opposed to a representative from each organization.

The meeting is set to be held on Thursday, June 15, at 7 p.m. at the community center in village hall.
