The Williston Park Board of Trustees Monday night unanimously passed a resolution that incorporated the Williston Park Fire Department, its three companies and emergency rescue squad.

Among the reasons to be incorporated, according to a letter from the department’s attorney, are the ability to apply for federal income tax exemptions, getting 501(c)3 status, protecting residents and being eligible for more state and federal grants.

The village’s Fire Department is a volunteer organization that was established in 1927. The  department currently has Engine Company #1, Hook and Ladder Company #2, hose and Salvage Company #3 and Emergency Rescue Squad.

Trustee Michael Uttaro, who is also the chief fire marshal for Nassau County, said the department is being more transparent and adding a layer of protection for both its members and the village.

“It’s a good step forward,” Uttaro said. “I am all in favor of it.”

In unrelated village news, the board reserved its decision during a public hearing on granting Cablevision Long Island a 10-year television franchise agreement, which last expired in August 2020.

During his report, Trustee William Carr said the Hometown Hero Banner Program voted to expand its criteria from current veterans to veterans who lived in the village at any point.

The next Williston Park Board of Trustees meeting will be Monday, July 24.
