Cohen Children’s Medical Center announced the opening of a $110 million, 24,000-square- foot Pediatric Surgical Operating complex in a press release.

The complex will specialize in cardiothoracic, neurologic, orthopedic procedures and general surgery.

“The complex is the culmination of a multi-year project that began with the Blumenfeld Family Pavilion, a five-story extension at the children’s hospital built in 2013 and named in honor of the Blumenfeld family’s lifetime giving to Cohen Children’s,” Northwell Health said in a statement. “Space was left in the master plan with new operating rooms in mind.”

Each 600-square-foot operating suite features amenities including no-shadow lighting, 3D imaging and 50-inch monitors.

Last month, Cohen was cited by U.S. News & World as Long Island’s top-ranked children’s hospital.

Charles Schleien, senior vice president and chair of Pediatric Services at Northwell Health, said the importance of the complex cannot be overestimated.

“We understand that the surgical and anesthetic needs of neonates, infants, children and adolescents are absolutely unique and quite different than those for adults” Schleien said in a statement. “The importance of this pediatric surgical operating complex cannot be overstated. The goal was to complete this crucial project through donor support and we’re grateful to the Damaghi family and First Quality Enterprises, and all of the members of our Cohen Children’s Advisory Board for stepping up. This is really a transformative space for patients, our community and for Northwell.”

Funding for the complex was part of Northwell’s Outpacing the Impossible campaign, a $1 billion fund-raising effort.

The complex will be named after the Damaghi family, who have donated over $1 million to Northwell over two decades, according to the hospital.

Construction for the Damaghi Family Pediatric Surgical Operating Complex began in late 2021. Surgeries previously took place at the neighboring Northwell’s Long Island Jewish Medical Center.

The complex’s post-anesthesia care unit includes 27 recovery bays which are 120 square feet each. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the unfinished unit was converted for patients battling the coronavirus, Northwell said.

The post-anesthesia care unit will be named after Gertrude and Louis Feil, the family trust of the same name that helped support the project.

“This operating suite is the culmination of so many people’s dreams,” said Jose Prince, surgeon-in-chief at Cohen Children’s. “It is where we as surgeons work to save and protect the dreams of our patients and their families as we teach surgery to the next generation of pediatric surgeons.”
