A fire that ripped through an apartment building in Great Neck Plaza on Monday forced 70 people to evacuate the building, according to the Nassau County Police Department.

Officers from the department’s 6th Precinct, located in Manhasset, were alerted of a fire Monday at 1:45 p.m. at 21 Chapel Place in Great Neck Plaza, officials said.

Great Neck Vigilant Fire Company First Assistant Chief Scott MacDonald conducted an initial search, finding the fire in the building’s electrical transformer room, Vigilant said in a statement.

Police, along with the help of Vigilant, Great Neck Alert Fire Company and Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department evacuated around 70 individuals from the building and controlled the fire within 30 minutes of its discovery, officials said. The Red Cross aided the residents and no injuries were reported by officials.

Vigilant officials credited the New Hyde Park Fire Department, Garden City Park Fire Department, Roslyn Highlands Fire Company and Roslyn Rescue for covering the rest of Great Neck while attending to the fire. While the investigation into the fire remains ongoing, according to police, the fire is deemed to be non-suspicious at this time.

Efforts to reach police for further comment on the incident were unavailing.
