Floral Park-Bellerose School sixth graders in Kristen Orsillo’s ELA class participated in a book sharing project, “Sip and See at Starbooks Café,” on Jan. 17. This project aimed to expose students to various genres and get a “taste” for new books.

Sitting in a circle, the students shared their book reviews one-on-one with their classmates. Their typed-up reviews included the summary, characters, their favorite part and who they would recommend it to.

At the start of the project, the students were given a list of sixth grade book suggestions and selected one that interested them. They had approximately four weeks to finish reading and created pacing calendars to ensure they would finish the book by the “Sip and See” sharing event. Some books the students read included “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” “My Life as a Gamer” and “Slacker.”

Orsillo plans to host another book sharing project in the spring.
