Sewanhaka Board of Education President Michael Jaime and Vice President William Leder were re-elected to serve another year Tuesday night.

Rosemarie Peltonen was sworn in as the newest member of the board alongside the other members of the board after being elected in May.

Peltonen takes over for Douglas Vigo, who did not seek re-election this year, and represents the Floral Park-Bellerose Union Free School District alongside Beth Kierez.

Jaime will serve as the Elmont Union Free School District liaison alongside Tameka Battle-Burkett.

Leder will serve as the Franklin Square Union Free School District representative alongside Stephen Toto.

James Reddan and Patricia Rudd will both be the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Union Free School District representatives.

Reddan, Rudd and Toto were not present at the Tuesday night meeting and will be sworn in at a later date.

Superintendent James Grossane congratulated the 1,326 recently-graduated seniors and thanked the district’s teachers and staff were their contributions to the 99% graduation rate.

Grossane said that 92% percent of the class of 2022 plan to pursue additional education opportunities.

In unrelated district news, Maria Hecht, principal of Floral Park Memorial High School since 2018, was granted tenure after a personnel resolution.

“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Maria since I arrived in Sewanhaka three years ago and she is an outstanding partner for Floral Park Memorial.”

Hecht has been with the Sewanhaka Central High School District for the entirety of her education career.

Before her current post, Hecht served as assistant principal at New Hyde Park Memorial High School – where she first began her career as an English teacher over 30 years ago.

During the public comment, Tiffany Capers, trustee for the Elmont Board of Education, inquired why the 2023 graduation ceremony held on June 24 and 25 was located at Hofstra University instead of the UBS Arena.

Grossane said they originally spoke with them for 2022 and 2023 but the arena is “not quite ready for us” but the district will continue conversations in the future.

The next Sewanhaka Board of Education will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 23.
